Photographed during the 2026 Barkley Marathons in Frozen Head State Park, Tennessee, this portrait captures Gary “Lazarus Lake” Cantrell — the creator of one of the world’s most enigmatic endurance events. Illuminated by a single shaft of light against the darkness, the image reflects the quiet presence behind a race that has become legendary.

For decades, Lazarus Lake has been the architect of chaos, designing a course that strips away certainty, comfort and expectation. Yet away from the clock and the spectacle, there are moments of stillness. This photograph reveals the man behind the mythology.
